Monument Rocks

Oakley, Kansas

National Natural Landmark

The Chalk Pyramids

Rising like ancient sentinels from the flat expanse of the Kansas plains, Monument Rocks—also known as the Chalk Pyramids—are one of the state’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders. Located in the heart of Gove County, these towering limestone formations reach up to 70 feet high, etched by time, wind, and water into arches, spires, and massive buttes. Designated as a National Natural Landmark, Monument Rocks offers a surreal, almost otherworldly experience—a reminder that Kansas was once covered by a vast inland sea more than 80 million years ago. The layered chalk and fossilized seashells hidden within the stone whisper of prehistoric creatures and long-lost eras, waiting to be discovered by the curious traveler.

For many, the journey to Monument Rocks is part of the adventure itself. Off the beaten path along gravel roads and surrounded by ranchland, it feels like stumbling onto a secret. Photographers chase golden hour light against the pale cliffs, while families and roadtrippers marvel at the scale and silence of the formations. There are no visitor centers or paved paths—just wide Kansas sky, wind through the grass, and stone giants that have watched over the prairie for millennia. In a state often overlooked for its natural beauty, Monument Rocks stands as a powerful testament to the wild, ancient heart of the Great Plains.

Personal field notes:

If these rocks could talk. That was the thought that ran through my head. What they must have witnessed over the centuries.
